Built with blue jeans and sunflower husks
Del Sur’s Ranch House looks reverently to the past for its style while also incorporating many forward-thinking green features into its design.
Timbers from an old pier in Portland were repurposed as ceiling trusses and trellises. And reclaimed oak from a 19th century barn was given new life as the Ranch House floor. Cabinetry and ceilings are built with recycled sunflower husks and wheat waste creating a beautiful, sustainable option to hardwood. Lumber waste from construction was ground up and used as mulch. And stones quarried from the site were used to create the building’s fireplace, façade and signature landscape walls.
An energy-efficient heating and cooling system has been installed in the Ranch House, and energy-saving appliances are used. Energy loss is greatly reduced through the installation of recycled denim insulation, use of air-tight ductwork, low-emission windows, fluorescent lighting and sun-sheltering deep eaves.
Water waste is also significantly curtailed by use of dual-flush toilets, a tank-less water heater and drought-resistant landscaping. Pervious concrete is used for the driveway and parking lot to allow water and rain to filter through rather than run off into the storm drains and out to the ocean, and a weather-based irrigation system tailors landscape watering to the local weather conditions on any given day.
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)
The sustainable design of the Ranch House makes it arguably the most environmentally conscious building in San Diego County and one of the most eco-friendly buildings in California. In fact, it recently received San Diego’s first Platinum rating for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) from the U.S. Green Building Council.
